So we are continuing to sift through all of our belongings and get rid of the excess. It is amazing how much stuff we have been hauling around with us over the years. I have started to notice some major changes in my life as a result of this.
- Our apartment is getting easier to clean. Without so much crap on our shelves they are easier to dust. Less clothes have made it faster to put away laundry. And there is just less stuff that needs to be put away.
- It is getting easier to get rid of stuff. Clothes I haven't worn for years is either finally getting worn, or donated so someone else can wear it.
- I am truly becoming less attached to our stuff. About a week ago there was a fire in our complex. As I watched along with the rest of my neighbors I realized that for the first time in my life, losing all my possessions didn't scare me like it used to. Everything I own is replaceable. I don't need my stuff to be happy. All my photos and music are backed up to MobileMe and we have a dvd of our wedding photos in a safe deposit box. As long as the people in my life are safe that is all that matters.
- I have stopped getting emails notifying me of clothing sales. Over the years I have stockpiled clothing because it was on sale. Not because I really wanted or needed it. I went shopping for "fun" or when I was depressed. I am trying to only go shopping now when I truly need something specific, not to try and make myself feel better. And when I really do need to buy something new, I am going to skip the sale section. I would rather spend a little extra money and get something I truly want, than something I tell myself I want because it is on sale.
I'm pretty sure Fritz keeps a copy of everyone's wedding photos in case something ever happens to your copy. You might want to check with him, but it's a little added peace of mind. :)
