My husband and I consume quite a bit of food on a weekly basis. We are health fanatics living on a tight budget, so cooking in bulk and eating leftovers for the week is what works best for us. Our shelves began filling with all kinds of different mis-matched plastic containers, which of course never stacked together right and gradually expanded in size taking up too much space in our small kitchen. It was time to simplify.
Our solution was to minimize the number of different sized and shaped containers we keep at hand. We now have about 20 each of two Ziploc brand containers (small round, medium square), 4 larger Pyrex rectangular containers and 2 large round Pyrex and 2 small. This system has so many advantages. We love Pyrex because you can cook (NEVER microwave plastic containers!!) and store in the same dish. That's one less dish to clean! With only a few different sized containers we have been able to eliminate missing lid situations. Ziplock brand containers are cheap, recyclable and stack really well in a fridge or freezer. And most importantly, now all our food containers stack together making storage much easier and taking up WAY less space in our kitchen!
How do you store your food??

We use only glass Tupperware. I found that the plastic ones would disappear or we would lose lids. Weird, twilight zone stuff. Once we started using glass all pieces were accounted for all the time. We use both round and rectangular (Depends what is on sale). We keep the plastic ice cream tubs for freezer foods though. They are tall and slim and stack-able.
