About a year ago I made a huge transition. I stopped buying books. Nothing could be harder for me as I was a book hoarder. I LOVE books and bookstores. I can spend hours in them. And of course I always would buy something. Books were everywhere, and I had probably only read half of them. Not very eco or bank account friendly.
But then I rediscovered the library and boy has it changed since I was a kid. Technology has taken over! After getting myself a new (free) membership I was able to login to the county library website. I could search for books I wanted and have them put on hold (up to 15 books can be held at anytime). Once available they would then be sent to the branch I selected to be picked up. My branch has no limit on how many items can be checked out at any one time. You can even renew your books online.
Your local library doesn't just have books anymore either. Most now carry DVDs and CDs as well. My iTunes and Netflix bills have both decreased significantly. Many of the magazines I read on a regular basis are available as well. Not to mention a variety of local and national news papers. Most branches also have computers with free Internet access. My local branch even has free movie screenings and other classes/lectures.
I mentioned all this was free right? F-R-E-E. Well, unless you count late fines. Not too shabby. So let me ask you something... are you using your local library?
