Downsizing to a Minimalist Life

Downsizing and Minimalist are to terms that are becoming increasingly popular these days. Especially in the Blogosphere. In the last few weeks my husband and I have talked a lot about this way of living and have decided it really supports our long-term goals.

I guess we are more open to the whole idea given our current financial state. We are both recent grads from professional school, although my husband is continuing his education still. He is working as a nurse and is my business partner in our new chiropractic practice. To put it simply, we have very little money coming in, more going out and interest accruing on hundreds of thousands of loans as we speak. We have done lots of things to cut down our spending, but have reached a point where we can't cut back anymore without an overhaul of our life. And that is exactly what we are going to try to do.

Our lease on our two bedroom, two bathroom apartment runs out at the end of February. Our goal between now and then is to pare down our "stuff" as much as possible which would allow us to move into a smaller one bedroom home. Like so many other blogs suggest, we are doing this little by little. It is less painful to get rid of things slowly so you don't realize how much you are giving up. Although I am starting to see that it is not so much "giving up" things, but making room for more important things in our life.  I know that by downsizing our life we will be able to pay off our loans faster, retire sooner and travel more. I am hoping that by living in a smaller residence I will be more encouraged to pursue activities outside of it.

Most importantly, I am hoping this whole process will help us put more value on our experiences rather than our "stuff".
